ATTENTION: Help Protect our Hobby!
There have been some misguided and uninformed attempts to limit the use of cameras on remote controlled aircraft, both in the US and around the world. Claiming to be protecting the freedoms of individuals, there is legislation pending in multiple states attempting to criminalize our toy planes, even though there are already laws on the books preventing spying on individuals and invasion of privacy. These people, based on knee jerk reactions to the term "Drone" are claiming that they are protecting their freedoms by taking away the freedoms of others.
This type of legislation must be stopped if we are to protect our hobby. The FPV hobby has brought about many technical advancements in electronics and IMU control systems. By limiting this hobby, we are blocking an interesting and creative way of getting the next generation of engineers and scientists interested in technical fields. Bans like this are based on uneducated, ignorant views of the hobby, and we must educate both the public and politicians.
We must show good examples and benefits of the use of this equipment, and shine a positive light on our hobby. Since the term "Drone" has such negativity surrounding it, I'd recommend we do not refer to our model planes and helicopters as "Drones". I also request that people use common sense when posting videos and flying. Although exciting to watch, posting videos showing reckless flying around people and public landmarks and dangerous stunts that can make the public, and governments, worry that we are a risk should be avoided. Bad press is bad for us all. For discussions regarding proposed restrictions on model planes, please take a look at the sUAS Legislation section of the FPVLAB forums:
